Welcome to Tuningi Safari Lodge
Madikwe Game Reserve
If you’re looking for the perfect destination for a photo safari in South Africa, you’ve come to the right place. Tuningi Safari Lodge is situated in the 75 000 hectare Madikwe Game Reserve, one of the largest private game reserves in South Africa and home to a fantastic diversity of flora and fauna, as well as some truly spectacular landscapes.
The lodge accommodates up to 16 guests in four Luxury Suites and two Family Suites, all of which boast breath-taking views from private wrap-around decks. The main lodge area features a cosy lounge and spacious dining room, a well-stocked bar and a large rim flow pool. These general areas are interlinked by a wooden deck that leads down to the popular boma area and viewing deck that overlooks a very active waterhole.
The Madikwe Game Reserve is located in South Africa’s North West Province and was opened in 1991. During ‘Operation Pheonix’ – the world’s largest ever game translocation – 8 000 animals of 28 species were moved to the reserve over the course of 5 years. Nowadays, the reserve is a photographer’s dream, as it is home to a vast array of wildlife, a list that includes 85 mammals, 420 bird species and 105 tree species. All members of the Big 5 are regularly sighted, there is a healthy population of cheetah, and packs of the African wild dog are a frequent feature on game drives. Geographically the region has massive volcanic intrusions known as Inselbergs, wide open plains and the riverine environment along the Marico River in the east of the reserve – all of which form the perfect backdrop for a South African photographic safari.
At Tuningi Safari Lodge, all guests are taken on twice daily game drives in state-of-the-art open Land Cruisers, led by an experienced and knowledgeable game ranger. Each day brings something different, whether it is tracking a leopard across the reserve, lions roaring at twilight, cheetah going about their business, or wild dog on the hunt. Guests with a passion for photography are encouraged to bring along all the necessary equipment for that perfect shot, and our guides will dish out tips for taking the perfect wildlife shot whilst on game drive. Many of our rangers are amateur photographers themselves, and as such will be more than happy to assist in any way.
