At Tuningi Safari Lodge located within the magnificent Madikwe Game Reserve, incredible wildlife sightings are part of everyday life. Our Head Ranger, Gavin Tonkinson, has shared some of the most memorable recent sightings that highlight the magic of Madikwe. From lions to elusive leopards, here’s a look at what’s been happening in the reserve.

The Ashia Cheetah Female and Her Litter

One of the most amazing sightings has been the Ashia female cheetah, a true symbol of survival in the wild. Over the past few weeks, she’s been spotted with her previous litter, now maturing into independent hunters.

These encounters show the incredible bond between mother and cubs as they navigate the plains of Madikwe and are a reminder of the vital conservation work being done to protect these endangered cats.

The Mighty Male from Tlou Dam

Another heart-stopping sighting came from the Tlou Dam area, where a massive male leopard was seen patrolling his territory. This dominant male was clearly on a mission to stake his claim over this part of the reserve.

Territorial patrols like this are crucial, as they protect their territory and secure their dominance against potential rivals. Witnessing such behavior is a privilege, as it offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of the animal kingdom.

A Young Male Leopard – Right at the Lodge

One of the most surprising and exciting moments recently was the sighting of a young male leopard perched in a tree just inside the lodge’s boundary fence. Leopards are known for their elusive nature, often blending seamlessly into the bush. To see one so close to the lodge itself is an unforgettable experience. This beautiful young male was likely surveying his surroundings and keeping an eye on potential prey in the area.

The Mathata Male: Stealing the Show

Drama unfolded recently when the Mathata male lion pulled off a daring heist, stealing a kill from a pack of wild dogs. Known for their cooperative hunting techniques, wild dogs are usually able to guard their spoils, but the Mathata male took advantage of the opportunity and claimed their hard-earned meal for himself. While such behavior might seem harsh, it’s all part of the survival dynamics of the African bush. These moments of raw power and cunning remind us just how unpredictable and awe-inspiring nature can be.

The Inselberg Female and Her Cubs

The Inselberg region of Madikwe is named for its rocky outcrops that rise suddenly from the savanna, offering shelter and hunting grounds for many animals. Recently, the Inselberg female leopard was spotted dragging an impala kill back into the safety of the rocks. Watching her expertly navigate the terrain while carrying her prize was a spectacle of strength and agility.

Her young male cub was also seen nearby, undoubtedly learning valuable hunting and survival skills from his mother. The leopard’s ability to blend into these rocky surroundings makes each sighting a challenge for rangers and guests alike.

As the seasons change and we head into summer, so too does the dynamic landscape of Madikwe Game Reserve. Each sighting offers us a window into the daily lives of the animals that call this place home. From lions patrolling their territories to leopards nurturing their young, Madikwe continues to surprise and delight with its diversity of wildlife.
