Big 5 Family-Friendly Safaris in South Africa

Here at Tuningi Safari Lodge, we have always marveled at the natural affinity children find with the bush. Children’s wonder at seeing an elephant, or their laughter at watching wild dogs at play, never ceases to inspire us, and we strive to emulate that same joy that comes so easily to the heart of a child.

We take pride in being one of few Big 5 game reserve lodges that welcomes children 6 years and older. In fact, our effort to create a safari experience suited to all ages has given Tuningi the reputation of being one of the most family-friendly safaris in South Africa.

As a parent, you shouldn’t have to compromise on family time in order to enjoy a luxurious bush escape. The two can coexist!

It’s for this reason that we firmly believe children should be included in safari experiences. Without compromising on serenity and relaxation, we invite and welcome all youngsters to our lodge in the knowledge that we will be learning as much from them as we will (hopefully) be teaching.

Good-to-know for parents:

Game Drives

Children 6 years and older are invited to enjoy daily game drives led by experienced rangers with their parents and other guests.

Work Book

All children are issued their very own Tuningi work book, wherein they can tick off all the exciting things they’ve seen like dung, animals, spoor, birds and trees.

Organised Activities

Between 1 pm and 2 pm each day, there is an organised kids’ activity at the main lodge hosted by one of the managers on duty. Games include treasure hunts, drawing, t-shirt painting, modelling clay, building puzzles, swimming and relaxing by the pool.

Meals

There are kids’ options on the menu at every meal, but these meals can also be made from scratch, depending on their wants and needs.

Children can eat at any time of the day; their meal times are entirely flexible.

Childminders

Tuningi Safari has experienced childminders available to ensure your little ones are kept busy and safe whilst you relax.

  • Treasure hunt to find nests, bones, eggs, snake skins and other items
  • Fun & games on the grass – memory game, giant snakes and ladders…
  • T-shirt painting with animal stencils
  • Clay-building competitions

  • Swimming and relaxing by the pool
  • Watching & identifying animals at the waterhole
