Tuningi 48 Hour Itinerary
Getting to Tuningi Safari Lodge
Tuningi is situated in the heart of Madikwe Game Reserve, about 300km north west of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Guests may arrive any time from 13h00 and are welcomed at the main lodge with refreshments before checking into their rooms.
The lodge can be reached by car from Johannesburg in four and a half hours. We can also gladly assist with road transfers through our reliable partners.
For those with a wider budget, and wish to experience an exhilarating fly-in safari, Federal Airlines operates scheduled 45 minute charters from OR Tambo to Madikwe Game Reserve’s excellent all weather airstrip. The lodge is a 20 minute complimentary transfer from the strip.
Day One
After checking in and getting comfortable in their rooms, guests are invited to join for the afternoon game drive which departs at 15h30 in winter and 16h00 in summer.
Our game rangers are highly qualified and have sound knowledge of the fauna and flora within the Madikwe Game Reserve. Enjoy the drive while they pass on this knowledge and passion and hopefully point out some spectacular game sightings along the way.
Around 19h00, guests return from their drive. There’s just enough time to freshen up before drinks are served at 19h30 at the bar. A delicious dinner is served at 20h00. When the weather permits, lanterns are lit and dinner can be enjoyed in the boma with a blazing log fire to keep guests warm.
End off the evening with a sumptuous dessert and a nightcap before bidding farewell to the simmering fire to the calling of your suite.
Day Two
The day starts off with a chipper wake-up phone call from your guide at around 5am. Enjoy a quick cup of coffee before heading out on the morning drive at 05h30 in summer and 06h00 in winter.
Return from your drive between 09h00 and 09h30 to a well-deserved brunch consisting of fruits, eggs, cheeses, and cereals – all freshly prepared and scrumptious. The rest of the morning can be enjoyed around the pool with a good book or enjoying some more game viewing around the waterhole from the underground hide.
For those with young families, an organised kids activity takes place at the main lodge at 13h00. Focusing on providing safaris for families in South Africa, at Tuningi we are passionate about kids, and would love to welcome you and your kids to the most memorable bush experience. Find out more about our kids’ programme here.
Lunch is served at 14h00 and can be enjoyed under the giant Fig Tree, where guests can relax and watch some amazing game viewing without even leaving the lodge.
You’ll have an hour or two to relax after lunch – have a swim, or indulge yourself with a pampering massage. The well equipped gym offers a fantastic opportunity to view wildlife while you build up a sweat.
The afternoon game drive departs at 15h30 in winter and 16h00 in summer. Return for drinks, dinner and a nightcap before heading to a hot shower or bath to soak off the dust from a day out on safari.
Day Three
Expect your early morning wake up call from your ranger as the birds start to chirp at 5am, before a quick coffee and a hop back onto the game vehicle for the final drive of your stay.
Return to the lodge for a hearty breakfast and a few hours of chill time before checking out at 11h00.
